Born in 1447, the girl was named Lucrezia after her mother Lucrezia Tornabuoni, but was always called Nannina. She belonged to the ruling Medici family and her younger brother was Lorenzo the Magnificent. In 1466 Nannina de’ Medici was married to the powerful Florentine patrician Bernardo Rucellai. The couple eventually had four sons and a daughter. In this letter, the only writing of Nannina’s that has come down to us, she complains bitterly to her mother about her husband’s ill-treatment of their son’s tutor. Angry at having no say in the matter, she writes: “Whoever wants to do things as they wish ought to take care not to be born a woman.” The letter was written in 1479 during an outbreak of the plague, however, Nannina survived the epidemic, living until 1493.
