Lucrezia Borgia (1480-1519) was born in Subiaco, one of four children of Vannozza Cattanei and Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI in 1492. She was married three times, first to Giovanni Sforza when she was thirteen years old, then to Don Alfonso of Bisceglie, and finally to Alfonso d’Este, son of the Duke of Ferrara in 1501. Lucrezia Borgia remained in the refined and cultured court of Ferrara until the end of her life, surrounded by musicians, poets, and intellectuals. Though she had six children with Alfonso, Lucrezia also had other romantic attachments—she exchanged passionate love letters with the celebrated man of letters Pietro Bembo and later became close to Francesco Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua. Lucrezia Borgia died in childbirth at the age of thirty-nine.
